1. Anticipate the “Guti” Weather
The Eastern Highlands are famous for the Guti—a localized weather phenomenon that brings sudden, thick fog, damp mists, and a sharp drop in visibility. It can be perfectly sunny in half of Mutare, while Christmas Pass is blanketed in dense white fog.
Action: Ensure your fog lights are fully functional before departure. If you hit a heavy patch of mist, slow down immediately, increase your following distance, and keep your hazard lights active.
2. Check Your Vehicle Clearance
While the main highway over Christmas Pass and up into Nyanga (toward spots like Troutbeck) is completely paved and Sedan Friendly, side roads heading to hidden waterfalls or deep hiking trails can turn muddy or rugged.
